A protest against the winner, on the ground of not declaring 51bs over* weight, was dismissed. i It will be seen by oar Ashurst i correspondent's letter that the well-known , stallion Papapa has paid the debt of nature, at his owner's form on the Pohangina river. Papapa, who was bred by Mr H. Redwood, was foaled in 1870, ana was by Raven worth, from the celebrated stud mare Waimes, dam of Puriri, Manuka, Ac. Among other victories, jhe won the Canterbury Derby, in a memorable year in racing annals, -when Lurline won the New Zealand Cup. Papapa was thought to ■ have a "good show " for the cup, but he bolted off the course and thus lost his chance. He achieved farther victories in Auckland, and was considered at that time the fastest 2-mile horse in the colony. Papapa has sired numerous winners in this district.
