Those who uphold the cause of temperance will he pleased to learn that most of the seamen employed on the Victorian fleet (says the Argus) are total abstainers, or nearly so. Following out the practice of the British navy, the seamen used to be allowed a certain quantity of rum daily. Those who did not care for that drink took in place of their " prog " allowance a small sum of money per annum. Gradually the numbers of the abstainers increased, until nearly all the crew were receiving " grog money " instead of rum. Tne Defence Department has now decided to aboligh this monetary allowance, and in lieu of it to increase the ration scale for food and tea. If the men relapse into a preference for a " toothful of old Jamaica " when they are not paid to eschew it the advocates of temperance will have reason for complaint against the rigid economy of the Defence Department.
