The followiug correspondence was re;eived: — From Messrs Curtis, Jnnuingg, Knox, Fleming, Gabites, Browne, and Mai, requesting that the drain in Manchester Street opposite their properties may be filled in. From the Land and Survey Department, agreeing to supply the labour and concrete blocks for the standard suryey uf the Borough, From the Palmerston Charitable Aid Board, forwaiding cheque £32 14s 6d amount due to the Borough Council forcharitable aid. From Mrs Ballance, conveying her sincere thanks to the inhabitants of Feilding, for their kind expressions of sympathy with her in her bereavement. From G. B. Bradford, requesting that about threa chains of footpath may be formed and metalled in Fergusson street leading to his house, and agreeing to pay. half the coat. From Bramwelt Bros requesting to be placed on the rate roll for section 30i and part of section 289 in lieu of W. G. i Haybittle. ; From M. Belfit, applying for the formation and curbing of a footpath opposite his two shops in Manchester street on the usual terms ; also requesting permission to erect a verandah in front tif the said shops. From Miss Constance Washbourue,^requesting to bo put on the rate roll in place of Henry P, Washbourne for section 169. From R. Robinson, asking for an extention of time to complete his contract. From George Smith, stating that he had taken his Contract for the making of a footpath on the Kimboltoa road at too low a figure, and requesting the Council to meet him by making some adhtional payment in lespect of the work in question. . From Mr L. E. Beade on behalf of his clients Messra A. and J. Hovind requesting the Council not to pass any progress payment due to Mr R. Robinson in respect of his Manchester and West streets contracts, unless Messrs Hovmd's claim of £10 12s 8d against Mr Robinson for work done, is held <yer on behalf of his clients by the Council, From the Town Clerk, informing the Council that his offices have been leased to The Colonial Bank and therefore he hoped the Council wou'd either build offices or make such other arrangements as will enable him th find suitSßle premises for the Couucil. From Mr J. 11. Steyens, Chairman of the Library Committee, suggesting the following names as a suitable committee for the ensuing year, viz: — Miss Goodbehero, Messrs G. W. Fowles, C. H. Hosking, P. Thomson, J. G. Cobbe, W; G. Shearer, S. Daw, J. H. Stevens, H. W. Davy, L E. Beade, A. B. Allan, EL Woolvec, The letter further stated.tbnl the affairs of the library are in a satisfactory condition, new books are being constantly added, excellent lighting arrangements have just been made, and other improvements carried out. It wae earnestly to be hoped that the Council will make suitable provision for a reading room and library when entering into any future arrangements for Council Chambers. From W. G. Shearer, reqeastiog th« Council to put down a few loads of metal on the road fronting his property in Denbigh street, as after a day's rain it wae scarcely possible to reach his section. From G. C. Hill, stating that b/ the 6th inst he will have completed taking the permanent levels of that portion oi the Borough agreed upon. The report of tho Clerk of Works was as follows :— A large quantity of metal has been spread during the last month but auotber 150 yards will be required to put the roads in order for the winter. Most of the drains and water .tables are in a bad state and require immediate attention, and it will be necessary to obtain additional labour for this purpose. The report further advised that another road« man be employed on half time, and that there would be several suitable applicants for the position. In respect to Mr Smith's application, the Mayor said that Mr Smith had already been paid an additional £4 over bis contract price, for carting clay, Mr Sandilands pointed out at the time the contract was let, that the price was too low, still Smith chose to go on with the job. The Council decided that they could take no further aption in the matter. Meeirs Bastings and Cobbo waited upon the Council with reference to the bad state of the" Square. ;The deputation stated that the raiepayers resident in the Square contributed £109 : towards the rates for which they got very little return. The water tables required clearing ' Bc^ grass and rubbish cleared away, ffa£ metalling was necessary in many places., The Council promised to consider the matter, and, the deputation withdrew. Resolved, That a loan of £800 be obtained under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, and the Public Works Act 1889, to pay one third the cost of the Aorangi bridge, and that a special rate of one penny in the £, be struck, to paj in-; terest on the same. Proposed by'Cr Carttaw, seconded by Cr Fowles, that the reports of the Finance Committee and Clerk of Works be adopted, —Carried. ■ <•' Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Gould, that Mr M. Belfii'a lequest be gran ted. —Carried , Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Chamberlain, that the Clerk of Works be authorized to give permission for the erection of verandahs, etc., when applied for. — Carried. :■ A motion proposed by Or Morey, seconded br Cr Chamberlain, that the request of Mr W. G. Shearer be complied with, was negatived, an amendment moved by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr Fowles, that the request be referred to the Public Works Committee with -power to act. being carried. - , : ; Proposed by Or Hay bit tie, seconded by Cr Sandilands, that the order given by Mr JR. Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Chamberlain, that Mr Bobinson be granted an extension of time for the completion of his Manchester and West street contracts.— Carried; proposed by Cr Morey, seconded by Cr Gould, that the following names be placed on the rate roll : that of Horace Bastings in lieu of H. Wollerman ; that, of Conatance Washbourne in place of H. Washbourne, and that of W. F. and J. Brafewell in lieu of W. G. Haybittle.— Carried. Proposed by Cr orould, seconded by Cr Morey, that the Clerk of Works be authorized to metal the Pound as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Of Fogies, sgconded by Cr Carthew, that the names proposed as a Library Committee be approved of.— Carried. . Proposed by Cr Haybittle, seconded by Cr Carthew, that the Clerk of Works call for tenders for increasing the width of the approach to the Cemetery, to erect a suitable gate, and also to repair and faave painted, the inner gate. — Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Thompson, that the petition from, prjperty owners in Manchester street be referred to the Public Works Comouttee to report to next meeting of the Council. — Carried.
