A Great Chess Performance

The redoubtable English Champion Chass Player (Mr. J. H. Blackburne), under the auspices of the Northamptonshire Chess Club recently played a number of e;ames simultaneously at their rooms. The Dumber of players who took boards was no less than 21, with two games indulged in by several. Alter playing for lour hours Blackburne had not lost one game, had accepted a draw with the Uev. W. Farnsworth and Mr. W. T. Church, and won 17 games. Later on Colonel Hollis, who had a good steady game, Sicilian defence, drew his, and in an Allgaier gambit accepted, Blaekburnfi, who thought he saw a mate, but by oversight tookhis opponent's rook instead of queen, eventually resigned his game with Mr. J. Morling, one of the Club's strongest match players. At the close of. the play the score stood at 19 wins, three draws, one loss. The Club were fortunate in securing the services of the noted blindfold player just after his winning the championship in the masters' tournament in London. A number of visitors were present, and manifested great interest in the play. To show the quick perception oi' the great chess player, it might be stated an original problem, constructed by a good local problemist, Mr. H. Hodges, was solved as soon as set on the board, and the numerous intricate variations pointed out to the lookers-on, to the apparent surprise or the constructor, who was present.
