Kiwitea Road Board

: *~ " — ~" - The annual meeting of the above Board was held last Saturday. As stated in our last issue Mr Williamson was elected chairman, defeating Messrs Taylor and Reid. The members present were. — Messrs Jones, Taylor, Homer, Powell, Morton, Reid, and Wiliamson. Mr Good* behere presiding. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence, was , dealt with :— . . . | From Mrs E. Cosaey, requesting that* a bridle track may be made to her section out of her thirds. From E. Short, Waituna, requesting- r permission to fall the road line fronting his section. From Walter Watson, Apiti, asking the Board to make a road to his property* From F. B. Frouch. stating that com- ' mumcation with the Kimbolton road via t, Peep-o'-Daj is now prevented,, owing to Mr W. S. Marshall having fenced across the only existing track which went through his property. ' " ■ • • From W. H. Philps, stating that the settlers are fencing off the track on the Waipuru road, and also calling attention to the necessity of bridges being erected A over certain creeks, ' ' $ From C. McKinnon, stating that hedeclined to take up the contract on the lower Kiwitea road, as he was under the impression he was tendering for the Whare road work. From D. M. Cole and eight other set* tiers in the Sandon Small Farm Block, ' requesting the Board to put the Waipuru road in a fit condition for horse traffic. From Thomas Chirm. asking permis- : sion to fall the road line opposite his sec- : tion in Pemberton, also from A. N. Galpin making a similar request. ■' ' \" From H. Boggis of Birmingham re the ' expenditure of his thirds. . . From the Land and Income Tax department, re C. E. Nicholas's assessment on section 40, block I, Apiti. From the Treasury, forwarding progress pryment of £200 for the Oroua Valley grant, also £1500 in respect of the Sandon Small Farm advance, and likewise £1500 for the construction* of roads in the Ongo Ward. \ ; Mr Homer presented the following petitions. — One was from settlers in the " Kiwitea, Birmingham, and Pemberton districts, asking the Board to erect public .. Pounds in those places, and until suchwork is done, to dispense with the services of the ranger. The other petition was signed by the Key W. E. Birks and 24 settlers In Birmingham, requesting the Board to metal about . two chains of Edward Street from the Kimbolton road to the Wesleyan Church. Mr Taylor observed that the Apiti Ward was already £1 100 in debt, and he could not see how the Board would be justified, in iucumng this expenditure. Resolved, That Mr Nicholas 1 request be granted. Resolved, ThaUie Clerk write to the Land Board, ancWrek upon what terms the land can be obtained from Mr Frazer for widening the road. Resolved, That tenders be called for* tobe in by next meeting of the Board,, for the Terrace road to the amount of £20 16s 3d, also for the amount of thirds to bo laid out on the Gorge road. Resolved, That in view of the need of further new roads in this Board's district and being unable to doanything adequate to the requirements of the settlers, it is desirable that this Board be formed into a County and thus obtain larger borrow - mg power*, The boundaries of the said County to be the mtme as the present Kiwitea Road Board, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to Mr Bruce, M.H.R., asking him to do what he can to bring about the desired change. Resolved, That A. H. Tompkins' name be placed on the rate roll in lieu of that of W. H. Salter. Resolyed, That Mr Haves be permitted to erect a verandah subject to the ap- ; proval of the engineer. Resolved, That thefascimng mentioned in the Engineer's report on the Pahikikura road be done under the Engineer's supervision. Resolved, That tenders be called for = 400 yards of screened and ordinary metal to be delivered on the Kimbolton road between Haynes' and Perry's roads, at a cost not exceeding £100, said tenders to be in within fourteen days and to be openod by Mr Taylor and the Engineer. A letter from Mr Ben Poole applying for permission to delay metalling on Havns' road until the road is dry enough to continue the work, was left in the hands of the Engineer to deal with. A motion that; £ fqr fibe' offered the people of Birmingham towards metaling two chnns of Edward street was lost. Resolved, That the contractor now working on the Mangoira road Pemberton be allowed to go on with No 2 piece, conditionally on his waiting for payment until the thirds are in hand. Resnlved, That permission be given to Thomas Chmn to fall the bush on road line fronting his section ; the amount to be paid when the ward is in funds. Res Dived, That Messrs Williamson flnjj Reid bo authorized ta sign cheque's. " Resolyed, That a tax of 2s 6d and 10g for sheep and sporting dogs respectively be struck, and that tenders be called for the collection of the same. Resolved, That the following tenders ha accepted ; Mangamako road. B- Boole at 20a per chain ; formation of bridle track on the Kiwitea Tapuae road, B. Poole at £172056 d. The monthly accounts ware passed for payment and tho Board adjourned.
