Feilding R.M. Court
The following charges wero yesterday disposed of before Mossrs Sherwill and Goodbehere, J.P.s : — In the case of the police v Frederick [ Lmd, who was charged with the larceny of wearing apparel at Beaconsfiald on the , 6th insc, Mr oandilauds applied to the ' court to give their decision before taking evidence en the other charge. Aftei hearing Mr Sandilands, and Constable > Tuohy in reply, the Bench decided tc " hear the evidence on the second charge, k Mr Sandilands asked that a note of his t objection should be taken, which the I Bench acceded to. The hearing of the charge of larceny of a silver watch, gold chain and swivel valued at £9 Is 6d, tht , property of T. S, Cormsh, of Beaconßfiolcl was than proceeded with. T. S, Cornish deposed, that as he wae 1 returning homo on the afteenoon in ques< ' r tion, he observed the accused coming , round the back of the house. The accused r who soomod slightly conf usod asked tht , way to Lyon's camp ; witness then weni j inside, and at once missed the articles j mentioned in the charge, Ultimately on searching some adjoining bush with a ' number of others on the following day, a \ quantity of clothing and the swiyel now r produced in court were found but no trace i of the watch and ofaam has yet been obtained. Cross-examined : Witness had a long I conversation with tho accused when he came out of the bush, aud asked him to \ give up tbe watch and nothing more . should be heard of the matter, at the same ' time pointing out certain suspicious cirJ cumstances againsi him ; his replies to nearly every question were •• he did not know." "William LotforJ, Richard Taylor, R, ' B. Oldershaw, and Constable Tuohy gave ' evidence for the prosecution. 1 The accused gay© evidence on his own behalf, and hifl statements wore taken down. ■ The Bench said that in the charge agaiust tho accused in Daniel's case there 1 was not sufficient evidence to sustain the ' charge which would be dismissed. In the second case, accused would be sent ' for trial at the nest sitting of the Supreme Court in Woliiugton on the 29th p instant.
