MR, GOODBEHERE ON THE UNINTELLIGIBLE.

TO THE EDITOR OF TUB STAR. Sik, — That njy utterances on Freetrade have disturbed Mr Goodbehere's " grain " cannot be helped, and if they are " unintelligible rubbish," then his own little snort must be still more so ; for why warn j his clients against the unintelligible ? | But I can well afford to grant him the I lawyer's privilege of " abusing the other { side " when tacts are ngninst him. The j theories, or principles of Freetrade look j well enough on paper ; so would the Ptolemaic system of nstromony in its time, but it had at least one defect — it was an error. And Freetrade in practice proves disastrous to freetrade workmen, and in the nature of things must do so, while strikes are their only defence against slave, or, worse than slave, labor. It, has also turned many country places in our native land mto desolations, and all its larjre cities into abominations, which statement is confirmed by General Booth the great " shimmer " of the age. It is a well known fact that a man's name is often the only strong point in his argument, but I am not going to publish mine to gratify Mr Goodbehere's curiosity. His views on Freelnide are already well known in Feilding, and as I understand them, he would allow Freetrade to close all our colonial workshops and send us off " a-minin« " with a " sixpenny book " (not worth a peiiny) in our pockets to cheer us in our tribulations. I believe if he had in obedience to the principles of Freetrade to forsake comforts, and take to mining, it would nltur his opinions about them. Bnt my principal contention with " Colonist," is : will New Zealand Tories, or Freetraders, if he likes to call them so, when coming into power dare to abolish customs duties on all imported articles barring alcoholic liquors? and if not what claim have they to bo called Freetraders ? I ana, etc., Emigrant.
