Chicago Exhibition
(PKE PBES9 ASSOCIATION.) Washington, May 2, The Chicago Exhibition was formally opened yesterday. President Cleveland made an eloquent speech, in which he referred in eulogistic terms to the stupendous achievement of American enterprise. At the conclusion of his remarks he pressed a button, which started the machinery, made the fountains play, and set the chimes ringing. At the same moment over seven hundred flags were unfurled, cannon boomed, and the enormous assemblage joined in. the Hallelujah Chorus. It was a magnificent transformation scene. The total expenditure on the exhibition buildings is put down at two huudred million In his speech, President Cleveland said the strong representation of all the countries of the world at the Exhibition exemplified in the noblest sense the fraternity of- nations. He welcomed Europe to compete and view the industrial triumph of a .vigorous race — the splendid fabric of a popular Government. Chicago, May 2. The newspapers compliment New South Wales on the complete appearance of her court at the Exhibition.
