Settling the Land

At a Cabinet meeting held in Wellington last Tuesday it was decided that several blocks of land of moderate size in the Otago, Southland, Wellington, and Taranaki districts should be set aside for the purpose of being treated as unemployed farms. The intention of the Government is to have the land cleared by able-bodied men selected from the ranks of the unemployed, who are to receive a fair rate of pay /or their work. After the land has been cleared it will be divided into small holdings, which the men will be allowed to settle on if they so desire at 4 per cent rental. The Government consider this scheme will be a powerful factor in enabling them to deal with tbe unemployed during the winter. The Government have set aside ±10,000 for the scheme.
