The Revenue
A SURPLUS OP £450,000. The financial year closed on Friday last. Results so far to hand show that the Colonial Treasurer's estimate was short of the amounts roalised in the various branches of the Pubho Service, and that a very substantial surplus, approximating £450,000, will be at the disposal of the (iovernment as the outcome of the year's receipts oyer expenditure. The Customs revenue exceeded the estimate by over £65,000 ; Land and Income- tax brought in £'565.000 as against aD esti-. mated £350,000 ; Stamps show a surplus of £35,000; Railways aro better by £17,---000 or thereabout ; in the Justice and Native Departments the expenditure is well within the estimate, while the Lands revenue is almost certain to show a surplus.
