British Landlords : Their Losses
Writing to the Times, "A Distressed Landlord," gives a doleful account of eight years' expenditure and receipts in connection with 140 acres of land in Esses, bought in 1878 for £-1000. The rent was then £160 ; hut in 1884 it was reduced to £51 15s. During the next eight years the aggregate amouut of rent received wns £414, and the expenses and taxation were £428 2s lOd. the 6um of £368 4s lOd baviog been spent on draining and other materials supplied to the tenant. Therefore tho landlord lost all interest on his capital during the eight years, and £12 2s tOd besides. If ho could escape with this loss, ami get his capital back entire, ho would still be a comparatively fortunate man ; but how much would the farm realise now if put up for sale ?
