Inquest at Birmingham
Mr Snelson (Coroner) held an enquiry at Birmingham on Thursday afternoon touching the death of Patrick O'Shea, nn unmarried man, about 45 years of age, who was killed whilst felling bush on the Coal Creek Co-operative Works on Wednesday last. The following constituted tho jury : — Messrs C. Grantham (foreman), IJ. Munro, F. Rickerton, J. Gordon, and J. and H. Buckman. The following evidence was adduced : — Henry Hancock deposed that he, Madden, McConnell, and the deceased were working together. Madden and Hancock were removing earth at the time, whilst McConnell and the deceased were felling a tree. When the tree fell, it came down in n contrary direction to that which was anticipated, and McConnell, seeing it swinging, called out to them all to get clear of it. Madden and witness managed to escape the tree, but the deceased, appearing to become confused, ran in tho wrong direction, and was caught by the upper part of it, his head being partly driven into the ground by the force ot the blow. The deceased was alive when they got to him, but expired shortly afterwards. McConnell gave corroborative ovidence, but admitted that he had not had much experience in bush felling. The jury returned a verdict of accideiual death.
