Pohangina Notes
[fbom oub own cubbespondent.] A committee meeting of the Pohangina Farm Homeatead Association No. 1 was held at Delaware Ashurst, on Saturday last at 3 o'clock, in consequence of the secretary being unable to go to Colyton. Mr R. Lankshear was voted to the chair. The secretary read correspondence from the Commissioner of Lands giving instructions to call a meeting for balloting for sections on Thursday, March 23rd, at Colyton. Two schemes were seat from the Land Ottice : (1) Dividing the block into 13 sections of 150 acres each, also 9 sections of 200 acres, and 3 septions of 320 acres each. Another scheme, if the Association preferred, contained 25 sections of 150 acres each, and 3 sections of 320 acres each. In all 4710 acres. 6600 acres wera allotted, in the first instance so that the remaining 4 members can take a 320 acre section each, if they choose, Mr R. Lankshear proposed that the last-mentioned scheme of 25 150---acre sections and 3 320-acre sections be adopted. — Seconded by Mr Curran, and carried. The secretary at once wrote this decision to the Commissioner at "Wellington, so that he could prepare the members for balloting. Mr F. Whibley proposed that Messrs Stanton, Pike, 11. Little, and Rankin be added to tho Committee, seconded by Mr Curran, and earned. It was proposed to ask the general meeting, on Thursday, to allow their Committee to be retained, as a centre for any action regarding roads and other matters necessary to the interests of the settlers. The Secretary then read a condensed report of the meetings and other doings of the Association since its formation— December I*2, 1891 ; and, also, the balance-sheet, which showed the expenditure to have been i'lß 13s 3d. The first call of 10s per member, for 33 members, amounted to .£l6 10s, leaving a deficiency of £2 3s 3d. The report and balance-sheet was adopted by the meetin<», and signed by each one present. Mr Curran proposed that a levy of Is 6d per member be made to meet the deficiency, seconded by Mr H. Little, and carried. One part of the report showed the action taken by the Pohangina Valley Associations on the question of obtaining freehold, and four years without residence. They co-operated with eight other associations from Bulls and Marlon, and were assisted by the M.H.R.'s of the districts. The combined action of all these associations no doubt helped materially towards obtaining the concession of four years without compulsory residence; but the request for freehold rights was rejected.
