It is proposed to hold simultaneous examinations throughout Australia, upon the same papers, which are to be set by a central committee, consisting of a delegate from each colony ; the Boards of Examiners in each colony to examine viva voce on the system of surveying ia force in particular colonies. We understand, on the very best authority, that the natives in the vicinity of Ruatoki who are obstructing the survcj' party, and those who are opposing tho advance of Mr Creagh and his party have expressed tho greatest determination to resist tho officers, and we learn that a largo force of Maoris is being collected for tho purpose. The position is almost critical, and those on tho spot believe that any demonstration on the part of Mr Crengh would provoke actual hostilities and perhaps cause bloodshed. It is believed, however, that it Mr Crengh remains passive, and waits for the protectiuii of tho law, bloodshed will bo averted. Walter Johnston, formerly Minister for Public Works, will stand for the new seat (Palmerston) an<i contest it against all comers. The prospects of the proposed butter factory at Cheltenham are most promising. Over 400 cows have been I promised by graziers in the district, and there is every probability of the affair turning out a great success. Mrs Hastie, of the Feilding Hotel, has a new advertisement in to-day to which the nttention of local residents nnd the travelling public is earnestly requested This popular, nnd excellently conducted hostelry, is already one of the best known and esteemed on the West Coast, and the improvements lately effected in the public nnd private apartments which have been lately mode at very great expense, can only tend to add to its reputation. Mr J. C. Morey announces by advertisement in another column that he will reopen the Bon Marche on his own account on Saturday, March 25th, with an entirely new stock of drapery and clothing. The premises are being renovated and improved throughout, and other alterations made for the better display of the various goods. The dressmaking department will be under the able supervision of Miss Scott, so well and favorably known in Feilding. The books of the old firm will ' be left with Mr Morey up till March 25th, during which time accounts may bo paid , at the Bon Marche. AYe congratulate Mr Morey on the step he has taken, and wish him all the success his enterprise deserves. i An Auckland telegram states that the f wreckage found at Kaipara is that of the ( barque Northern Star, which left Hokianga for Wellington with timber, and is now* considerably overdue having been 23 i days out. Tho vessel would have ex- , perienced all the force of the recent gales. . The crew of the Northern Star are— John McKenzie, captain, late of tho Presto ; , M. Case, first mate ; D.
