' MANCHESTER ULUI3 F. ME CAETHEW'S TEAM OF VETERANS. This match, which for some weeks past | has been looked forward to with so much mterest amongst cricketing enthusiasts, both old and young, took place undermost favorable auspices yesterday. The veterans went in first, aud put together 72 runs, Reade with 33 to bis credit batting superbly, Parr at length bringing about .his downfall by a smart piece of stumping. Tucker's catch at short slip, which got rid of Bailey, was beautifully taken. Sherwill, wboVas just getting " set," had to retire temporarily owing to the ball rising very quickly and striking the frame of his spectacles, one of the glasses get* ing knocked out, but luckily beyond the frame cutting the bridge of his .nose, Mc^, Sherwill escaped any serious injury. This mishap no doubt affected the player's nerve somewhat, as on resuming later on he was bowled first ball. When eight wickets of the Manchester team were down aud about 20 runs required to win, it looked any odda on the veterans ; how • ever (jraratt played very steady at a most critical time for his side and soon knocked up 13 runs, when he was bowled by Reade. The excitement now became intense, especially when Bray scored a four from his first ball. The next, however, ended his innings, and the game resulted in a win for the veterans by one run only. There was a large number of spectators on the ground, several ladies gracing the proceedings with their presence. The antics of Churcher were proyocatiye of ' much mirth amongst the onlookers. Gar* ratt and Tucker, and Leyett and Beade bowled with great success for their respective sides. This was undoubtedly the match of the season, and we hope to hear of the return coming off shortly, when possibly the tables may be turned, Below are the scores : — Veteraks.
