Opening of Aorangi Bridge

A public meeting was held at the Manchester Hotel last night to cousider the advisability of observing the oponing of the above bridge in some special manner. Mr E. Goodbehere (Mayor) presided, and tho following gontlomen woro also present : — Mossrs Lethbndge, Bull, Saudilauds, Mathoson, Kirton, Curtis, Bastings, Bray, Carr, P. Thompson, Fowles/ (jlendinning (2), and \V. Nicholas. The chairman, after stating the purpose for which the meeting was called, invited those present to state their views as to the best manner of celebrating the occasion. Mr Sandilands said, As he was one of the first to take the matter up in the Borough Council, he would move the following resolution : — That a banquet be held ; that the charge for tickets be ss ; and that a committee be formed to make the necessary arrangements. — Mr Kirton seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Bastings 6aid that Feilding had been greatly ignored in the past. Tutting aside the question of politics, this district had been much neglected by successive Governments ; and he considered it would be a good plan to invite the Minister ot Works and the district Member to attend. Mr Lethbridge proposed, and Mr Kirton seconded, a motion, which wan duly carried, to the effect that a public demonstration be held on Wednesday, the 22nd instant. With reference to the suggestion made by Mr Bastings, it was decided that that and other details be left nt the discretion of the committee ot management. A motion waa then moved by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Sandiland, That n committee consisting of Messrs Goodbehere, Bray, Bastings, Sandilands, Bull, Wm. Bailey, Revington Jones, Captain Campbell, Lethbridge, Peter Thomson, and Carr, with Mr Matheson as secretary, he appointed to make the necessary arrangements for carrying the affair through. — Carried. After passing a vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding the meeting broke up.
