Manchester Horticultural Society
The above society held; their autumn show in the Assembly Booms, Feilding, yesterday afternoon and evening. The weather was most unfavorable, and this fact, no doubt, considerably militated against the attendance of the public. The , exhibits were really excellent, especially 1 for fruit and vegetables, though we should have preferred to see more competition in the various classes. A collection of dahlias, 24 varieties, for exhibition only, Bent by Mr J, Weightman, was very good; six monster apples exhibited by Mr James Wise were also very fine. Mr W. Jones, of Kiwitea, forwarded for exhibition three mammoth long red mangolds grown from seed supplied by Messrs Barraud and Abraham, which were a grand evidence of the productiveness of the Kiwitea soil ; some cabksies. which he likewise sent in for competition were prodigious. The show of apples was very good. Some black and white grapes shown by Mr F. Fowles were an excellent exhibit, and about the finest we have ever seen. The; plants exhibited by Mr J. Weightman require more than passing mention, some loliage coleus plants being very fine. Mr F. Y. Lethbridge officiated as judge, his decisions giving every satJßfac:i:m, and Mr C. Fitzherbert ably carried out his secretarial duties. In the evening, owing to the wretched weather, the attendance was only poor. The band played a selection of music very well.
