Farewell Tea and Social to the Key T. H Lyon
The fnrewell tea to the Rev T. 11. Lyon which took place last night in the Primitive Methodist Church, wa3 an unqualified success. The following ladies presided at the various tables : — Mesdames ThoLnpson, Worefold, Gould, Troven.i, and the Misses Brittain, Curtis, E. Wor9fold, Ileald, Pope and Foster. We must not omit to mention the bachelors table, Messrs Baker, Perkins, Haycock, and Attwood being tho caterers, and directly the dooi'H were opened at G o'clock, the young ladies rushed the seats around this festive board. Over "200 partook of tei. At 8 o'clock the public meeting was held in the Salvation Army Barracks, whii-h was crammed, numbers having to stand. Mr Linton presided, and in a few well chosen words, referred to the loss which the Primitive Methodists here were about to sustain by the removal of Mr I-yon, whose ministrations amongst them had been productive of much good. The Uev. G. Carr, Captain Fleming (of the Salvation Army), Mr G. Adams, Pastor Garstein, Mr T. Bull, Uev 11. M. Murray, and Mrs Wright, also addressed the meeting The Rev T. H. Lyon, in returning thanks, said he felt it was an inspiration that ho should have such a send oil' from so lar<_'e an audience. Which of us, he asked, feels he is doing as much as he would like ? Still, the reception he had met with thsit night from so lar^c a gathering would be an encouragement for him to go forth to do his duty elsewhere. In kindly terms, Mr Lyon then referred to his successor, tho Rev. Mr Clements, who was known to the speaker as a sincere hard worker in the cause of the Gospel, and he felt sure that Mr Clements would be liked and appreciated by them. In conclusion, he thanked them nil for the kind farewell extended to himself and Mrs Lyon. and tendered his hearty thanks to all who had assisted to make the evening such a gre;it success. The choir, during the proceedings, sang several anthems very creditably. Miss Curtis contributed a solo, Mrs Lyon and Mr Haycock a duet, Mrs Thompson presiding at the harmonium. A collection was taken up before the close, as there was a small deficiency of about i-16 in the circuit accounts to wipe off, which it was hoped would be accomplished that day by means of the tea, subscriptions amounting to £4 10s, and the collection. Votes of thanks to the chairman, and to the ladies and gentlemen who had contributed to the success of the evening's proceedings, brought the affair to a close.
