Opening the New Bridge at Aorangi
Wk hope that the suggestion made by Councillor Sandi lands, at the last, meeting of the Borough Council, to the effect that there be a public demonstration made on the occasion of the opening of the Aornngi bridge, "will be carried out. It is customary to have a function of the kind in other places to mark so important an event, and there can exist no good reason why the rule should not be followed here. The expense would necessarily be very trifling, and coukl easily be raised among the ratepayers and residents who are more immediately benetitted by the construction of this important I public work. It is several years ago | since the project of building this bridge was first mooted, and many very serious difficulties have had to be overcome, and obstacles removed, before it was accomplished. The several local bodies concerned are prohibited from using any portion of their revenue for such a purpose ; but we think that if the Mayor of Feilding and the Chairman of the Manchester Road Board were to initiate a movement in the direction indicated, they would be loyally supported by their Councillors aud Wardens, as well as by the public generally. As the contractors will be be prepared to hand over the work iv a very short time, the sooner action is taken the better ; and if a Wednesday afternoon were selected there would be no inconvenience to business people or loss to employes.
