The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, FEB. 16, 1893.

Thkre is a very pretty quarrel evolving from the question of the introduction of pauper Russian Jews into the colonies, between the Hon Mr Shrimski and the Premier. In our | last issue we published the reply of of the Hon Mr Ballance to the first . telegram of the Hon Mr Shrimski, which certainly seemed conclusive, t and, in our opinion, was not ill-natured, nor did it bear any indication that it r was written in anger. It would appear, however, that we were mis- [ taken in that view, for the honourable and peppery Mr Shrimski has wired to the Premier : " I am sorry you should have lost your temper so fur .is to stigmatise the action of those philanthropists .it Home who have spent millions upon millions to ameliorate the condition of the unfortunate Russian Jews, as what they are doing is worthy of the highest commendation by all who take an interest in their fellownien, be they black or white. The statement that the intended immigrants are paupers is probably made with the view to influence public opinion against them, for there is nothing to prove that they are. I may say, that although your answer may be acceptable to Trades and Labour Councils, it will not prove to be so to the majority of thinking men, who in a free country expect no distinction to be made in treatment by a State of civilized people. I leave the matter to the judgment of my fellow citizens.' 1 Whether or not the Premier had " lost his temper," it is quite clear that the Hon Mr Shrimski lias, and is now on the warpath for (he Hon M r Jiallance.
