Meeting of Creditors

A meeting of the creditors of Mr J. K. Lever, confectioner, Feilding, was called yesterday afternoon. Mr Scott, D.0.A., presided. Messrs Sherwill and Morey were the only creditors present. The statement of affairs showed liabilities amounting to £108 6s 7d, and assets consisting of stock in trade and furniture valued by the debtor at £35 5s 7d, leaving a deficiency of £73 Is. Mr Scott enquired how the bankrupt found the £8 towards paying the bankruptcy proceeding, the reply being, that the amount was raioed by selling goods on hand. Mr Scott pointed out that the debtor could manage to fossick up £8 to throw away in legal expenses, and vet leave his rates and rent unpaid ; a very improper proceeding. Mr Sherwill remarked, that the bankrupt had been carrying on business for months past when he was hopeleeslj insolvent, and he (Mr Sheiwill) bad been grossly misled as to the debtors position. Mr Scott observed that Lever had been far from straight- forward in his behaviour to his landlord, and said that bankrupt must make the usual application for his discharge, and would have to pay his own legal expenses. Mr Scott also gave the debtor to understand that the application would be opposed. The proceedings then concluded.
