Borough Affairs
It will be seen from the report of the nrowudiugs at the lust mooting of tho Borough Council that the affairs of the municipality are in a fairly prosperous condition. The revenue is steadily increasing, and at tho present rato of progress, will be doubled in about five years, or evon less. Tiie fact of tho Council having abandouod altogether tho idea of lighting tim town \>y ineuus of gas, owing to rho enormous expense which would Inentailed in cutting up tho Mreots t<> lay tho necessary mains, us well as "o the oven more important fact t hit the ratepayers were not by any moans unanimous in favor of the suggest i.-n, has cleared the way for a proposal to light tho town by eleetiiciiy. Th. latter uiodo of lightiug has much t., ztcoujiuend ;t. It ia (heaj'ei, ;md
attaching it to buildings etc, would entail no expense on the Borough : ratepayer by cutting up the streets and footpaths. And last, but not least, we believe that a majority of the ratepayers would be in favor of it. The motive power for driving the ; engine would, we take it, be water i which could be amply supplied by ! either the Oroua river or Kiwitea. In this connection we may state that the Chamber of Commerce could be of vast assistance in a matter of so much importance, and we trust that body will wake into active life coon.
