Feofment of a Church Pew
Yesterday Mr Fred. Pope, builder, of this town, showed us a singular old indenture. It bears the date of 29ih of January, 1791, "in the thirty-first year of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth " and conveys from the trustees of the Chapel of Hanley, in the County of Stafford, to Robert Pope, of the same place, " all that row or seat in the chapel — being the farthest pew into the North Gallery there against the West end thereof, distinguished by the number 85 on the door of the said pew, with the appurtenances thereto, in consideration of the sum of thirty-five pounds." This made the ancestor of Mr F. Pope a freeholder in the electorate, and therefore entitled him to a vote for the election of a member of Parliament. The document is a very interesting one.
