Commenting on the criticasm of the Investors' Review, the Colonial Treasurer points out that the total assets of the colony amount to ±'173,000,000, against a liability for borrowed money £'55,000,000. Melbourne, This Day. The Government intend to pursue a a vigorous policy of retrenchment in the public service. It is improbable that fresh taxation will be imposed, but much will depend on the success of the local loan of three-quarters of a million.
