Cannabal Congo
♦ . \ The Rev. P. M. Flannagan, of Chicago, has received a letter from Bishop Augnourd, Vicar. Apostle of Oubangui, on the Upper Congo, where cannibalism is of every day's occurrence. The Bishop writes:— "A Frenchman, M. Depoh Meyrfcc, has just been killed and eaten in the Upper Oubangui, with 10 black soldiare and 30 carriers, A Belgian expedition has just been destroyed by 30 Arabs, who put eight Europeans to death by veritable martyrdom. The chief of the expedition was forced to look on. His arm was taken off, and roasted and eaten in his presence. The same was then done with, lib other arm, and he was finally killed in the slowest and most painful manner possible. It is horrible ! When shall it be our turn ? Within the coming six months I shall go to found a mission at the place where M. Depon Mayrac was killed and eaten, and I implore the co-operation of your prayers for the success of this important undertaking."
