School Picnic at Makino
» The Makino Public School pic-nic was held in Mr A pel's paddock on Thursday last. Each child was the recipient of a present, tbe funds being subscribed for that purpose amongst the settlers of the district. A number of flat races and jumping events took place, useful prizes being given to the fortunate winners. At 4 o'clock those present sat down to an excellent spread, which was done full j ustico to. The event of the day was a tug>of»war between the married and single men of Makino. In the first pull the murried men won somewhat easily, but at the second attempt the single men turned the tables, after a very stubborn encounter, in which victory remained for some time m doubt. Both teams were too exhausted to pull off the 'deciding heat, so a draw was declared by mutual consent The day's proceedings were wound up by a dance in a tent, on Mr Lundon's property, dancing being kept up until three in the morning, everybody enjoying their day's eating, which proved a great success.
