Among the prisoners in gaol in the United States under the charge of homicide there were on September 25— 10 clergymen, 15 physicians, 8 dentists, 7 lawyers, 20 teachers, 2 planters, 15 stook raisers, 10 cattle traders, 31 merchants, 3 contractors, 13 druggists, 4 grocers, 4 real estate brokers, 5 liyerystable keepers, 12 millers, 6 brewers, 10 hotelkeepres, 28 saloon keepors. Of the entire number nearly one-third were foreign-born or of foreign parentage. A terrible case of the wholesale murder of intending .Russian immigrants has just been tried before the tribunal of Lomja, in Poland. The evidence showed that the members of a family^ named Kouhkovslcy and some accomplices had from time to time murdered no less than ten persons desirous of leaving the country, but unable to obtain the neces* sarj passports. These emigrants, who as a rule, carried with them the whole of their savings for years, were lured by the prisoners to out«of-way spots bj offers of assistance in evading the frontier guards, and were than murdered and robbed. In some eases the hapless victims were slowly done to death with horrible refinements of cruelty. The prisoners were sentenced to terms of hard labour ranging from fifteen to twenty years. The Blackwater River in County Cork, Ireland, overflowed its t>anks on November 2lst. The adjacent stretches of country were inundated for miles. The town of Fermoy was in dirlaiert,, the gasometer being submerged. A house at tbe base of the Clandorumps Mountains was swept away and the occupants drowned. ■ : .• . v-..j
