Suspicion of Foul Play

[Per Press Association.! Wellington This Day. At the inquest held at Newtown to-day on the body of an infant named White, who died on Thursday, under circumstances that the doctor refused to give a certificate, the mid-wife who assisted at the child's birth stated its mother was a single woman, and when it was a few weeks old she gave it to a woman named Mrs Favall to adopt, paying her L 5. The child, at its birth, was fine and healthy. Dr Alexander deposed that the child was brought to his surgery to be treated for a nasty bruise over the right temple, which White could not satisfactorily account for. The child died in a few days, but the doctor refused to give a certificate. On making a post mortem he found the body very much emicated, and in his opinion death was caused by effusion of blood on the brain brought on by a fall or a blow. White said he would benefit to the extent of £20 by its death.
