Capture of a Shark

DAW'S

Two fishermen, named W. Halliday and Chris duHkf-en, who were out fishing with their set nets and boat recently in the West Channel of the Bay, were surprised to find so many of their fish destroyed and also their nets. At last it was discovered that a large shark had partly rolled itself up in the net. It took the united strength of two fishermen to get the captive to tbe surface or the water. Then the trouble began, the shark fighting for liberty and the fisher* men using their utmost endeavors to gave t >eir nets. After about an hour s struggle the shark was got on board the boat and brought into MordiftUoc, when it was found to be a rare specimen of what is known as the Indian shark. A peculiarity of this shark is that whenever it attacks prey its eyes stand out from its head about 2 inches, and afterwards they sink about the same distance into the head. The teeth are movable, as if hinged to the jaw, lying flat in the mouth until the shark is about to bite, when it can raise them up at pleasure. It is very evident that the shark captured recently has had a very rough time of it, as there are three bullet holes m the back of the neck. The mouth opens to the extend of 14 inches, and is nearly the same in diameter. The lengh of the shark is 7 feet 1* inches-, and the color is a dark slate with white spots. The fishermen were obliged to return home, as the shark made such havoc with their nets that they were unable ta continue fishing. It is the intention of the hshermen to exhibit this specimen.-Mel-bourne Paper. ■■
