Feilding Athletic Sports
The seventeenth annual gathering of the Peilding Athletic Sports was held on Boxing Day. The weather was fine although rather too windy, to make it thoroughly enjoyable. Some 3500 spectators of all ages patronised the affair with their presence. As usual every thing went off well, no hitches of any sort occurring throughout the entire day. Mr Hartgill, the starter, got his fields off excellently, no penalties haying to be inflicted on any of the competitors for leaving their mark. Mr Sherwill, the Secretary, had hiß hands full of work which he performed to the letter, ably assisted by Mr C. Bray, the Treasurer, and the rest of the committee. During the day the Feilding Brass Band, \inder the leadership of Mr R. F. Haybittle, played a selection of pieces splendidly, in fact we do not believe they were ever heard to better advantage. The catering at the several booths was all that could be desired, and the proprietors reaped a golden harvest. There waß a shooting gallery ereoted in a safe place, and did a good business. The money taken at the main gate was £92 and at the Lawn entrance 4>52, so that financially this was the most successful meeting the Club has held for some years. The Lawn looked very picturesque with the immense assemblage of well looking ladies nnd children whose brilliant white and colored dresses looked to the best advantage in the brilliant sunlight. The trees now growing luxuriantly at the back of the lawn afforded ample shelter from the wind which was at times rather boisterous. Before Mr Copeland left the ground many of the committee took advantage of the opportunity to congratulate him on the success of his handicapping. Mr Templer the energetic secretary of the Kiwitea Sports Committee secured the services of Mr Copeland, as handicapper, and Mr Hartgill, as starter, for the events to come off at Kiwitea next month. In conclusion we must again congratulate the Committee and Stewards on the excellence of their arrangements.
