The Destraction of Furze
♦ — ~~ Mr Geo. Nye, Sunnyside, Foxton, submits lor the benefit of our readers the following experience in the destruction of a furze plant which is such a nuisance in every district in the North Island where it has been introduced : — Inquiry is often made, What is the best means of getting rid of furze ? Most people cnt them down and burn them. This is a mistake, as it gives the land a fresh coat of manure, and makes the furze grow up the stronger, Being a farmer for many years, aod having many miles of furze hedges, I used to cut them down within tnree inches or so ofthe ground, and lay them back on their own roots, il the light and air are shut out the roots will rot and die in a tew months, In m> case should the fire be run over them. As the furze rots, the o-rass will grow in a short time. This remedy is the most effectual where the furze has spread, and is thick and heavy. All that is required is to take a little trouble when cutting the furze so as to see that the roots are well covered,- Manawatu Times.
