(P.ER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, December 23 A deputation waited upon the Minister of Lands to-day in reference to the setting apart of a block of land as a special settlement for Wellington old soldiers. Mr KcKenzie agreed to set apart a special section of the Waimarino block, on what will be the Trunk railway line, beyond Hunterville, old soldier's hind scrip to be used in the purchase. The Hon Mr McKenzie told a deputntiod tiiis morning tbat he could not allow bueh settlers to make their own roads and raise the money under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, as there would be no continuity in the roads unless Government had the making of them. This Day. One of the Roman Catholic clergy, Father Lauzeau, died here about eight o'clock this morning. Napier, December 23. A man named Sullivan was driving a dray surmounted by a frame, near Waipawa, to day, when the dray capsized and he fell under the frame, which crushed him and severely injured his spine. On the way to Waipukurau Hospital he expired. A man named Willian R. Gilbert was arrested here to-day on a charge of forg ing a cheque at Wellington on the first November.
