« When Mr Bruce, at the conclusion of his speech here on Tuesday night, announced that it was not his intention to seek re-election for the Rangitikei seat, which lie so worthily represents, there was a general feeling of regret, although not of surprise, because if this was the first occasion on which he had given public expression of his intention, yet many of his friends and supporters were already aware that Mr Bruce purposed retiring from political ,ife for a time. In giving this timely notice to his constituents, Mr Bruce lias only acted in consistence with his thoughtful nature. He has given them abundant time to look about for a fitting successor worthy to follow in the footsteps of such able representatives as Mr Bruce and his predecessor the late Mr Macarthur. That such an one will be found, we have every reason to hope and believe. Rumour already points to one gentleman, a well known farmer, who has already had a large experience in the management and control of local bodies, one who is not only very popular and highly respected personally, but who also has every requisite qualification for the position. His political opinions are in opposition to those of the present Government. While we will be exceedingly loth to part with Mr Bruce as our representative at the end of the present Parliament, yet we are perfectly satisfied that his reasons for his action are good and sufficient. He will be a loss to the House of Representatives, where he enjoys the reputation of being nn universal favorite with his fellow members on both, sides of the House,
