Pohangina Notes

JFBOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.! The school picnic came off on Friday as appointed, and was a success so far. The people began to come on the ground about ten o'clock in the forenoon, and plenty of willing hands set to work and put up the seats and tables for the children as Ac ground was too damp for them to sit down on the grass. Mr Gtewler, the chairman of the school committee, and Mr Durhng were particularly active and energetic. The tea and comestibles were then put on the tables by the ladies of whom there were-young and oldover a hundred. Under their skilful hands the tables were made to look beautiful, and very attractive. Grace was sung, led by Mr Durhng. and the effects of all the sweet young voices joining in was veay charming. The more serious business theu commenced, and the children eniojed themselves thoroughly at the feast provided for their delectation. This part of the programme was wound up with a scramble for sweetmanta. The sports were then started of which there were twenty one events consisting of boys, girls, and baby races ; a skipping match ; walking, blindfold and sack races, all of which afforded immense amusement. Owing to the heavy Tainfall which, however, did not last long, several of the events had to be postponed for a time, but when the weather cleared again business was recommenced. But while it was raining no time was lost, because the prizes were given out in the schoolroom, and indoor games were indulged in, Mr Wildbore took a photo graph of the children as they were grouped on the green, In the evening Mr Wildbore entertained the visitors and scholar s with magic lantern views, for an hour or two, after which the party bToke up and we all went merrily home to enjoy that rest which everybody needed after their enjoyable day.
