The New Zealand Rifle Association meeting at Trentham is fixed to begin on the 9th January, and end on the 14th January. This Day. The inquiry into the death of Ah Ching at the lunatic asylum, begins at 11 a.m. to-morrow. Another section the Northern Trunk Railway will shortly be opened bringing it within a mile or two of the Makohme Gorge. Dunedin, This Day. At the annual dinner of the old boys of the Otago High School reference was made by some of the speakers to systems of education not dove-tailing into each other, and the remedy suggested was that education should be free from the University downwards. Auckland, This Day. Mr Lawry, member for Parnell, ad" dressed his constituents last night. Some discussion took place at the meeting concerning compensation to publicans, and E. Worth, ex M.H.R., proposed a motion j disapproving of Lawry's conduct who \ introduced a Bill giving effect to that principal. This was lost, and Mr Lawry received a vote ot thanks and confidence. At the Supreme Court, C. E. Madden was adjudged guilty of contempt in practising as a barrister aud solicitor without j paying the fees, and was fined £25. Amongst the witnesses examined to day in the Scott murder case was the chemist, Powell, recently sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude, He deposed that he had sold poisons to Scott. The trial has been further adjourned till Friday.
