The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1892. Census Returns

From the Census Returns for 1891 of the population, of the colony we take the following information respecting persons directly engaged in the cultivation of land, or in rearing or breeding animals, or in obtaining raw products from natural sources :—Farmers, 25,826 ; of these 742 were females. Relatives assisting at farm work, 14,286, of whom 1555 were of the fair sex. Overseers or farm bailiffs, 349. Farm laborers, 13,749, only 33 of whom were females. Market gardeners, 906 males and 19 females. Fruit-growers, 198 males and 8 females. Wine-growers, 7. Gardeners (horticulturalists), 2255 males and 21 females. Agricultural implement workers, and others, 1411. In pastoral pursuits there were 1395 males i and 31 females, with 350 relatives assisting, and 512 station overseers or managers. Stock riders, drovers, shepherds, &c, 6427, of whom only 2 were of the female sex. Dairy farmers, 356 males and 96 females. Milkers and dairymaids, 203 males and 110 females, and 36 males and 7 females otherwise employed at the dairies. Bushmen, 2536, and others employed in the forest, 431. Rabbit-catchers, trappers, fowlers, bee-keepers, beehunters, and others, 1307. There were 1250 males, and 1268 females of independent means. Under the heading of persons dependent upon the State supported by voluntary and State contributions — hospitals, 741, benevolent asylums 840, lunatics 1729, orphans 238, industrial schools 446, refuge 23. There were 2 beggars, and prisoners in gaol, 480. There were 293,781 females in the colony, who required 6602 milliners and dressmakers to look after them, while the 332,877 males had only 4250 tailors and clothiers, and the whole population required but 3916 boot and shoe makers, 362 medical men, 138 dentists, and 289 editors and authors, of whom 7 were females Clergymen numbered 732, and under the heading of " Irregular Clergy " were 156 males and 87 females. There were 69,879 boys and 69,374 girls attending school, and 3025 boys and 4391 girls receiving tuition at home, with 1644 male and 2617 female teachers to educate them, and 21 inspectors to regulate the teachers.
