A San Francisco Scandal

A great sensation has been. caused at San Francisco by the exposure and flight of a docter named Henry Beals. Dr Beals and a woman named Mary Montrose, a midwife, have for j a long time past conducted a private lying-in hospital in Mission street. The doctor and the woman lived together as man and wife, and received only patients able to pay heavily, vnderconditions ot the utmoatsecrecy. It now appears that more than 40 children have been born in the house, not one of whom has been heard of after birth, and there is no doubt that til of them have been permitted to die, or been put to death. T ae suspicions of the authorities having been aroused by the . finding . of a babe's dead body under mysterious circumstances, they followed up the various clues until the tragedy was traced directly to the Missionstreetestabhshment. They then arrested the doctor and the woman without warning, and seized the books, which, with the other evidence obtained, gave an idea ofwtathad been going on in the establishment for two years past. Beals was released on a bail-bond of lO.OOOdols, The, woman remained in custody, and Beals has disappeared. It is reported that the money and influence necessary to secure hia escape from punishment were to have been furnished by the hands at some particularly wejtfmojm, families, whose daughters had been inmates oi the hospital. The Montrose woman has given certain information to the police which* while she claims thai there was nothing criminal in th< conduct oi the house, establishes th< fact that more than 40 children wer< born there, all of whom died.
