« THE AUCKLAND ABORTION CASE. A HEAVY SENTENCE. (P£B PBEBI ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, November 30, Albert Thomas, aged about 20 years, a French polisher by trade, was arrested to-mght by Detective Campbell on a charge of having attempted to murder Mr J. L, Eirkbride. During the day the hammer found on the verandah was identified by three or four people who said they had seen it in his use. Thomas will be Drought up at the Police Court tomorrow morning and remanded. This Day. The man Thomas was remanded. The hammer which he left behind was the clue that led to his arrest but for that there would have been little chance of finding out the perpetrator of the assault. GrISBOBNE, This Day. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here last night, and another was felt at 6.58 a.m this morning, Auckland, November 30. The chemist, William Powell, charged ' with using instruments to procure miscarriage, was found guilty at the Supreme Court to-day. Judge Conolly sentenced the prisoner to ten years' penal servitude. Lyttelton, This Day A passenger by the Te Anua from Melbourne named Ryan, on his way to join his friends in Halcombe, died between Lyttelton and Dunedin last night from consumption. He was yery ill when leaving Melbourne.
