The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1892.
We understand that the Premier, the Hon. John Ballance, has positively declined to accept the advice of his colleagues and take a trip to some other part of the world for the benefit of his health. Wa can quite understand that Mr Ballance seen many obstacles in the way of his leaving the colony, the chief of which is probably that he has not perfect confidence in the prudence or descretion of the Hon. Mr Seddon who would necessarily be his locum tenens. It seems a pity that one who, like Mr Ballance, has won the personal esteem of even his most determined political opponents, should be sacrificed so ruthlessly to the exigencies of his party and policy. We think that if the Hon. Mr Seddon could be induced to " take the pledge " not to extinguish the Railway Commissioners, or do any other equally rash aot, Mr Ballance might be induced to change his mind and accept the well meant counsel of his friends who are only desirous that his very valuable life may be prolonged for the benefit of the colony he loves so well. Our contemporary the Advocate has cried " peccavi. " In the last issue of that journal the editor tacitly confesses that he begun the attack on the Star in anger and has ended in sorrow. We admit that we were somewhat severe in our rejoinder anent *' office letters " but not more so than the occasion deserved. We sincerely hope he will take seriously to heart the lesson we have given him, and in the future will remember that vulgar profanity or impertinences are but poor helps in an argument. An interesting letter on the subject of "Borough Borrowing" appears in our correspondence column to-day, which we hope will act as an incentive to other ratepayers to assist in the consideration and discussion of so important a subject.
