THE POHANGINA ROAD BOARD.

\ Mr Hayn's Appointment. to the editor op the star. Sir,— As a ratepayer of the Pohangina Road District. I may say that your remarks re the appointment of the Engineer are endorsed throughout the whole district. For my own part when I read of the appointment, it seemed so utterly unreasonable that 1 at first thought the amount of the per centage must be a mispnnt but unfortunately it has turned out only too accurate and the unlucky ratepayers will now have to pay ten per cent for work which a number of equally capable men offered to undertake at fiye per cent. There can practically be no justification of the Board's action in this matter. The fact remains that this gentleman, a near relative of his proposer, is appointed oyer the heads of men equally fitted as far as the exigencies of the position demands, and who were prepared to perform the duties at half, the cost. Of course the Chairman and Mr Richards, must be partly absolved from blame in the matter. But as public men Mes/srs Arbon, Burton, and Dicken have signed their death warrants, and the sooner they are extinguished the better for all conserned. These large hearted gentlemen seem to hold very peculiar views indeed as to the duties and responsibilities attached to their position, No doubt acting on the same philanthropic principle we shall presently hear of some fat contract being let to a brother, or cousin of one of the wardens at double or treble the lowest tenderer's offer. In conclusion although I signed the nomination of one of the offenders, I heartily coincide with your opinion viz, that we should endeavour to send these unprofitable stewards back to the quiet solitudes of priyate life before they have time sufficient to knock the bottom out of the boat entirely. lam, etc,, J.G.B.
