An Earnest Lecturer
It creates a good impression when those who come before the public as reformers give proof by their actions of their disinterestedness— lor deeds speak more loudly than words— -and it must be admitted that Mr Tennyson South has exemplified ..the principle in his career in the colonies. The S.A. Temperance News for August, 1890, (published in Adelaide) says : 'In coming to, Australia, Mr Smith did bo as a stranger, but his widelyacquired reputation had preceded him, ' and :' immediately upon his arrival that prince of advance agents^Mf R. S. Smythe, waited uponliim and endevoured to secure a year's exclusive 9ngageme»t of his Jectureb at a handsome tee per lecture. This offer Mr Smith declined, but beiflg a stranger y and having made no special pre-arrangement with the Temperance organisations of South Australia, he consented to give two lectures; under Mt Smythe's auspices. W« Jectures clearly evioced the gri»t ability of the « second Gough. ' A press copy of Mr* Smith's letter declining a further engagement lies before usarid we cannot do better than quote the terms. AdetadvJuly^ Dear Mr Smythe.--! have to thank you for cheque;? or;twenty .: g^ineaa--please find receipt eiipiosed., • / j I think that as mj work liar, a philanthropic object i oughttb work for the Temperance ;; and : 'Religious Societies, Blthouff hi ant quite awaje they will noV.pe,,able^ toj pay/ me nearly the fees you can afford. With kind regards believe-me. '■■■' Faithfully yours, ; Ed; T, Smith. Mr Smith it may be stated during the past six months in New Zealand, has thrdwn open 'his free to the public, and has tisited towns' without any guarantee whatever from the Temperance Societies. — Wellington Press. . . ■; , ; yj '<■ 4-,-.- . - ;, *■
