"Robbery Under Arms "

« An adaptation by Messrs Dampier and Walsh from Kolf Bolderwood's sensational drama was produced in an excellent manner by the Dampier Company last night. The play, in which the scene is laid in the early days of the Victorian goldfields, was well put upon the stage, and received in a most enthusiastic manner by a large audience with marked demonstrations of approval. Mr Dampier's rendering of the character of Starlight was a masterly exposition, and he showed himself to be an actor, quite equal to his reputation. Miss Lily Dampier as the heroine/played her part well, and acted in a very natural manner, and was particularly good in her love making scenes. Miss Russell played the part of Kate Morrison in a style which left nothing to be desired. Miss Carrie Bilton as Warrigal, acted in a way that proved her to be possessed of dramatic powers beyond the average. " Billy" by little Mis^May Ren no, was an excellent portrayal of the precocious young Australian. Mr Barns as the heavy villain was a success. The part of Inspector Goring was taken by Mr Harford in an able manner, and Messrs Buller and Kehoe, as O'Hara and Maginuis were very good iv their respective low comedy parts, and frequently " brought down the house," Miss Julia Merton, as Miss Euphrosyne Aspen (a maiden lady of uncertain age) was excellent, the scene in the police barracks with the two troopers was most ably played by all three. Miss Rose Dampier as Grace Storefield had not muoh to do, but played well, and in I the scene in which she appears mounted on her favourite horse (supplied by Mr Bilderbeok for this occasion only) showed that she was a capital horsewoman. The minor characters were ably sustained, and the piece went well throughout. This evening Pettit and Conquest's sensational drama will be produced. This play will give Mr Dampier an opportunity of show mg his versatility as an actor, as during the piece he appears in no less thau three characters of a widely different description. We expect a large audience will roll up to-night as it is the last opportunity the Peildmg public will have of seeing this excellent company. The company appear in " A Royal Pardon," which is referred to in another column.
