Volunteer Items

« Members of the Manchester Rifles are reminded of the capitation parade this evening, in the Assembly Rooms. The Herald reports that at the rifle range on Tuesday morning several mem* bers of the Wanganui Rifles were engaged in class firing at the marksmen's stage, and according to the regulations, with fixed bayonets. The great danger attaching thereto was shown by the fact that in three cases the bayonets flew off at the time of firing, and it was only good luck that prevented a serious accident occurring. In the interests of all concerned the practice ot firing with fixed bayonets j should be at once discontinued. r/ 1
