Four of his brothers still live in the Wairarapa, and one, Edward, the youngest, at Colyton, near Feilding, and though the notice received was very short, they were all present at the funeral. Deceased's father was one of the pioneers of Wai" rarapa, where he. took up a sheep station in 1842, and early settlers still .have kindly memories of his hospitality, of which many stories were told. He* was one of those who considered the weary traveller had a claim on him, and in no instance would he allow anyone who arrived on Saturday night to pass on till the following Monday morning. Some years after his father's death, Mr Thomas Smith sold out his interest ill tbe run to his brothers, and bought a farm at Makara, where he resided some years before removing to this district about six years ago. He resided on his farm at Fitzherbert until recently, when he took up his residence in Fitzherbert street. Deceased married the ; youngest daughter of Mr Monk, of Makara, who is left to mourn her loss. The family consists of twelve, nine sons and three daughters.
