Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Show
Tho above annual show was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from every point of view surpassed all previous shows, The entries for this year were 723, as against 756 last year. The judging was, on the whole, satisfactory, and the general arrangements for the public convenience were all that could be desired. The attendance yesterday wns enormous, something like 10,000 being present, comprising settlers from the Manawatu. Oroua, and Rans;itikei districts, and from other parts of the colony. A meed of praise is due to Mr Miles, the energetic and courteous Secretary, to whose exertions much of the success of these annual shows is greatly due. There was a splendid show of agricultural implements and dairy requisites on the ground, which attracted considerable attention on the part of farmers and others. Messrs Barraud and Abraham had a grand display of grass seeds, with boxes, in which the various grasses were in vigorous growth. Amongst these we noticed two splendid samples of silver oat grass and sheep's fescue respectively, grown by Messrs Finnis and Browne, of the Harbour Board Block. Messrs Reid and Gray, of Dunedin, exhibited twelre double furrow ploughs, convertible into double digger and single digger in subsoil ; fitted with patent front lifting gear, also No. 2£ chaff cutter, No. 3 corn bruiser, No. 2 combined drill, a set of 8 feet digging harrows, 8 feet hay rake, one double drill turnip sower, and set of tine harrows. Mr W. G. Haybittle, of Peildmg, exhibited a number of imple* tnents manufactured by Walter A Woods' Company. Mr Dermer's champion cow, bred by Mr Jap. Stuckey, was an attractive animal ; in fact the whole of Mr Dermer's exhibits were tiptop specimens of their class, and their owner well merited the honors which be gained, Following are the principal Drize*takers : Thobough-bbkd Horses. — Stallion over 4 years— Forester, Ist and champion; Somnus, 2. 3 entries. The total number of entries was 923. There
was a grand show of horses. Forester beat Somnus in the fchoroughbrlH stallion class. The champion draught was Manager. There was a fine display of sheep, especially in Romney Marsh and Lincoln. Mr Tanner, of Hastings, had the champion ram and Mr W. Wilson, of Whenua. kura, champion ewe m Romney Marsh ; Mr R. Harding, of Hasting, had champion ram and Mr W. B, Allen, Wairarapa, champion ewe. There was a poor show of Shropshires, but the exhibits of fat sheep were excellent. The show of cattle was the best jet seen here, that of fat cattle being exceptionally good. Mr Mc'Cardie had champion bullock. Of pigs there was a poor exhibit. The display of implements and vehicles was adtnitedly the best ever seen on the coast. The hunter competition, for which there were S3 contestants, was won by Mrs Tanner's Alma, Mr Wootton's Tomtit being second and Mr Tavener's Dandy third.
