Birmingham Notes

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT, j Moaquitos are in full force here. A lamp fixed at the entrance of the Wesley an Church would be a great improvement as the road is in a very rough state, and a dangerous barbed wire is fixed on the fence by the side of the footpath. These barbed wires are not allowed by law to be fixed so as to inflict injury to the public or your neighbor. Any harm done by the sharp points either to a person's clothes or cattle renders the owner of the land liable to an action at law for compensation. The ladies' night at the Eiwitea Literary Society was a grand success notwithstanding the rough night and downpour of rain. A good programme was gone through, refreshments were handed round by the ladies committee, and the whole proceedings reflect great credit on them (the ladies). It will be a source of gratification to all when the money order branch is in working order. Any person would suppose that the post office officials would have had no difficulty in appointing a substitute during the illness of the postmaster, so as not to cause inconvenience to the public, but the New Zealand people seem to take very little notice of affairs as they well know that as Wellington and the big towns are looked after the little places may whistle. As we are to have a change of carriers of the royal mail, I suppose we shall get another coach on the road. It will be quite exciting to see the " nursing," as the drivers of opposition coaches call it, that will take place should the " times" be the same. We are badly off for fresh fish, good fruit, lamb, and veal.
