Land for Settlement
It is understood that the Government hayonow an opportunity of acquinng the Mokau-Mohakatmo block on exceptionally favourable terms. As we have on previous occasions pointed out, this block is one of the most valuable in the North Island, owing to its accessibility, its adaptability for profitable occupation by small settlers, and its great mineral < wealth. It is a olock of land which should j never have been allowed to pass into pri- ] yate possession, and if the State can now secure it on reasonable terms, the oppor- j tunity is one which the Government will ' "be to blame if it fails to improve. It would be an excellent thing for the colony that this fine area of upwards of 50,000 acres of excellent land with its enoimous ' coal measures should pass to the ownership of the State, its surface being ren- < dered available for settlement, and its minerals being otherwise utilised in the public interest, — Post.
