As an instance of the way messages are mutilated in transmission the Post says : " Lord Onslow was lately represented by a cable message to have told a representative of the Pall Mall Gazette that New Zealand offered the best advantages for a Salvation Army colony, its homestead law being favourable. The version of the same message published in the Australian papers was as follows, and bears an entirely different meaning: — " The Tall Mall Gazette publishes an interview with the Earl of Onslow, late Governor of New Zealand, with reference the condition of affairs in that colony. Lord Onslow said that the best means of bringing about the salvation of New ZeaI land was by settling the people on the land, in order to open up the country. The homestead law which was in force in [ the colony was highly favourable to the accomplishment of extensive settlement." No doubt when we get the full text of Lord Onslow's speech anent the early careers of the members of the N.Z. Ministry, it will be found that what was impertinence as put by the cable crammer was really a compliment when uttered by liis Tifirrtshin.
