• (PEH PRESS ASSOCIATION). Melboubne, November 1. The weather experienced for the second day's races of the V.R.C. was favourable. In the Cup race Pilot Boy and Portsea fell at the seven furlong post. The following are the results of the three principal events : — Hurdle Handicap ; about 3 miles. — \ Merrigal, 1 ; Imposter, 2 ; Mikado 11, 3. Time, suiin 59£ sec. Melbourne Cup, 2 miles.— Glenloth, I1 ; Ronda, 2 ; Penance, 3. Other starters—Malvolio, Paris, The Admiral, Oxide, Correze, Althotas, Portsea, Tirailleur, G'Naroo, Clonard, Enuc, Pilot Boy, John I S., Affiance, Chatham, Hopetoun, Little Bernie, Theodore, Titan, Jericho, Malolo, Camoola, Deerswood, Swordbearer, Azim, Candour, Norbert, E.K., Star of Erin, Attalus, Eurus, and Polly Mohr. Betting — 6 to 1 against Malvolio, Bto 1 Camoola and Clonard, 10 to 1 The Adtniral, 12 to 1 Portsea, Enrus, Correze, and Malolo, 100 to 6 Titan, 100 to 5 Hopetoun, Penance, and Theodore, 100 to 4 Glenloth, Ronda, A.ttalus, and Swordbearer, 100 to 3 Candour, Oxide, Paris, Chathem, and Tirailleur, 100 to 2 Norbert and Althotas, 100 to 1 others. Entering the course proper, Polly Mohr showed in front, but at the distance post the order was Chatham, Eunic, Paris, Ronda, and Azim. Nearing the seven furlong post Azim ran up top again, whilst Pilot Boy fell and Portsea and Tirailleur toppled over him, Portsea being seriously injured. Passing the sheds with five furlongs to go, Polly Mohr became the leader, being followed by Clonard and Azim, but here the rain which began to fall again, rendered the colours indistinguishable until the field entered the straight. At the distance Glenloth was two lengths ahead of Chatham, and was followed by Ronda, Penance, Oxide, and The Admiral. A hundred yards from home the latter came with a great run, but failed to maintain it, never getting nearer than a head to Glenloth and Ronda, the former eventually winning very easily by three lengths from Ronda, who in turn was a length and a halt in front of Penance, The Admiral a good fourth, with Clonard, Paris, Hopetoun, Malvolio, Attalus, Jericho, Enuc, and Correze following in the order named. The last four to pass the post were Little Bernie, Star of Erin, John S., and Althotas. Time, 3min 36} sec. Glenloth was kept in a good position in the centre of the field all the way but was nearly brought down by Pilot Boy when he fell. Van Yean Stakes; one mile. — Ascot Vale, 1; Pygmalion, 2; Quality, 3. Time, lmia 44£ sec. November 2. Robson, who rode Glenlotb, says he must have stumbled over Pilot Boy had the latter not fallen in towards the rails. Glenloth's owner, Mr Urquhart, a milkman of Fitzroy, did not back him. Christchubch. November 1. Two Christchurch residents, Parish, a milkman, and Pierce, a barman at the Oxford Hotel, drew Glenloth in Tattersail's monster cash prize consultation on the Melbourne Cup. They will divide about .£9OOO. London October 31. It is reported here that the well-known thoroughbred stallion Ormonde has been sold to a Californian studmaster for £30,000. •
