Now that the assistance of the Truant Inspector has been invoked by the local School Committee, it is confidently expected that the average attendance will be considerably augmented during this, the first quarter of the school year. It does not appear to be generally known among parents that the school year begins after the examinations. Hitherto Lhe custom has been to send new pupils, who have just reached the required age, to, school after the Christmas and New Year holidays. This is a great mistake, because it often has the eflect of throwing these children back a class, for this reason : — The work of the new school year begins, as we have already pointed out, immediately aftep the Inspector's Examinations therefore, by the time the Christinas holidays come round every class has done three months good work. From this it can easily be seen that a child who would, if sent to school now, be able to begin the work of any particular class ; while by delaying until after the above named holidays that advantage is lost. To put the thing in another way ; a youngster who joins after the Christmas holiday has to learn in nine months what the other children who join now have twelve months to learn in. This is neither fair to the scholars nor to the teachers, Another point is this : every child kept from school is mdirectiy reducing tho revenue of the school by keeping down the average of attendance on which tlits income is paid by (he Government.
